COMMERCIAL REFERENCE
How many pieces come in a tile box?
Most common US formats and the pieces per box. The final coverage is printed by the manufacturer: check the box label before buying, it varies by brand and lot.
| Format | Pieces per box | ≈ sq ft per box |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12 in | 10 pieces | ≈ 10.0 sq ft |
| 12 × 24 in | 8 pieces | ≈ 16.0 sq ft |
| 16 × 16 in | 5 pieces | ≈ 8.9 sq ft |
| 18 × 18 in | 5 pieces | ≈ 11.3 sq ft |
| 6 × 36 in | 12 pieces | ≈ 18.0 sq ft |
CLEAR QUESTIONS
Before you open the box.
Why should I include a margin?
Tile requires cuts at edges, corners and transitions. The margin also keeps spare pieces for future repairs.
Is coverage per box always the same?
No. It changes with format and brand. Use the square feet printed on the box you are buying — most US ceramic boxes cover 10-20 sq ft.
Does it work for walls?
Yes. Measure width by height of the wall, subtract large openings for extra accuracy, and apply the same logic.
