HOW TO APPLY

Recommended order of work.

  1. 01Apply to clean, dry surfaces with a roller, brush or airless sprayer.
  2. 02One coat is usually enough; spot-prime repairs for uniform sheen.
  3. 03Topcoat when dry to the touch and lightly sanded if needed.

PRO TIPS

  • For heavy stains, smoke or water damage, step up to KILZ 3 Premium or an oil-based KILZ Original.
  • Do not use as a finish coat — it is formulated to be painted over.
  • Works under both latex and oil topcoats.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you open the can.

How much area does a gallon of KILZ 2 cover?

The data sheet declares 300-400 sq ft per gallon depending on porosity and application. At the practical reference of 350 sq ft/gal, one gallon primes an average 12×12 bedroom's walls and ceiling.

KILZ 2 or KILZ Original?

KILZ 2 is water-based with low odor and works for most jobs. KILZ Original is oil-based and the right call for heavy stains, smoke damage or severe tannin bleed.

Do I need primer on new drywall?

Yes: fresh drywall and joint compound absorb paint unevenly. A coat of KILZ 2 (or a drywall-specific PVA primer) before the topcoat prevents blotchy sheen and color variation.

How is this different from the paint calculator?

Here you see the coverage of one specific product per container. The calculator converts your actual square footage into a purchase in gallons, quarts and pails.

Orientative data with manufacturer sources. Actual coverage depends on the surface, the tool and the application technique.
